About the Village
About the Village

What is Village on the Ridge?

We are a membership community of older adults in Roxborough and the surrounding neighborhoods. Members get together socially, learn together, and help each other with rides and small tasks so that everyone can stay active and independent at home. We are a nonprofit run by volunteers.

Is this a retirement home or a place I move to?

No. There is no building and no one moves anywhere. "Village" describes a network of neighbors who live in their own homes. It is part of a national movement of similar groups across the country.

Who runs it?

Volunteers, most of whom are members. A volunteer board oversees the organization. [Add one sentence on paid staff if there are any.]

Joining

Who can join?

Members who live in Andorra, Manayunk, Roxborough, and Wissahickon neighborhoods (19127 and 19128 zip codes). You do not need to be retired to join.

I'm still active and don't need any help. Is this for me?

Yes. The Village is as much about company and things to do as it is about help. You can also volunteer. The help is there if and when you want it.

What does it cost?

$125 a year for an individual or $175 a year for a household. That is about $10 a month for one person.

What if I can't afford the fee?

Ask about Assisted Membership. Call the Membership Chair at 267-519-7673. The conversation is private.

Can I try it before I join?

Yes. Come to a Wednesday coffee break, 10 to 11 a.m. at a local cafe. No membership or registration is needed. Some other programs are open to the public too; they are marked on the calendar.

How do I join?

Join online in a few minutes, or download a paper application and mail it with a check.

Can partners join together?

Yes! Individuals residing together may join as a household.

What happens after I join?

After you join, we'll give you a quick call to welcome you and share some upcoming events you may be interested in. You'll also get access to the 'Members Only' part of the website as well as the weekly newsletter (if you don't already received it).

Do I need to volunteer?

Volunteering is not a requirement of joining. Approximately half of our members volunteer in some capacity: assisting another member, serving a a committee or the board, or helping with a one-time event.

Can I give a membership to a parent or friend?

Yes! Call the Membership Chair at 267-519-7673 to discuss.

At restaurants and cafes you pay for your own food and drink, and some outings have a small admission fee paid at the door. Member services provided by Village volunteers are free of charge.

What help can I ask for?

Examples include: Rides to medical appointments and the grocery store. Help with computers, cell phones, TV and cable, and computer security. Small household tasks such as changing lightbulbs or smoke alarm batteries.

How do I request a ride or help?

Log in the the website, click on Members Only, then click on Request Member Service. A Google form will open for your to enter in specific details.

Who are the volunteers?

They are fellow members and neighbors who have submitted clearances and background checks. Volunteer drivers also provide the Village copies of their driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance.

What don't you do?

We do not provide medical care, personal care, or home health aides. We also do not provide landscaping or snow removal services. For those needs, members share recommendations for trusted providers.
