About Village on the Ridge

Our Mission
Village on the Ridge, a volunteer organization, provides programs and services for older adults in Roxborough and its surrounding neighborhoods.  We strive to support our neighbors in their goals to stay socially and physically active, have a positive quality of life, and remain independent as long as they are able.

Our Vision
In the future, older adults living in Roxborough and its surrounding neighborhoods will know that there are a broad range of social and physical activities available to them. They will be assured that the community enhances their quality of life, fostering a belief that they can live independently in their homes as long as they are able.

“Villages represent a promising model, with the potential for positively affecting seniors in ways that may reduce social isolation, expand access to services, increase well-being, and increase seniors’ confidence in their ability to age in their homes.” Andrew Scharlach, researcher on aging and social welfare.

Everyone living in Roxborough and its surrounding neighborhoods is welcome to participate in this new organization as a member and/or volunteer.

Joan Stanton
is a life-long Philly girl but grew up in a Philly most people don’t know ever existed. It has shaped her soul and led her to Roxborough which is as close as one can come to her childhood experience. The playgrounds of Joan’s childhood were woods, farms and main roads still without sidewalks where children biked without a worry to the banks of the Delaware. PTC (pre-Septa) was a few mile walk until her early teens, running infrequently if at all. A voracious reader, she remembers with eternal gratitude the librarians who came to the area for two hours every two weeks driving a huge Free Library ‘bookmobile’. They always had a handpicked pile stashed behind the desk for her. During this most rural of city childhoods Joan became a Girl Scout. Despite a religious education and devout family it is the Girl Scout Oath and Laws that repeats in her head and heart to this day when faced with hard choices both personally and professionally. Joan spent 35 years working for the federal government. During the early years she put herself through Lasalle College nights. Then she went on to Temple Law and spent her last 20 working years as an attorney. During those years she lived in East Falls volunteering and often holding offices with the East Falls Community Council, the Zoning Committee, EF Tree Tenders, Friends of McMichael and Inn yard Parks and her block association. She still belongs to a book club that started in EF and has been together, depending on who is asked, 25-30 years. Joan came to Roxborough for a ‘short’ hiatus between East Falls houses. She was captivated by easy access to the Wissahickon, the Schuykill Center’s walking paths and the river as well as the fun walks all over the community where there is always some friendly, interesting person ready for a chat and a laugh. She spends her time reading, traveling, hiking, rollerblading, caring for whatever abused dog/s she currently owns as well as an aged feral cat that has been scratching her daily for 21 years as she feeds him. She is an avid volunteer at the Schuykill Center Wildlife Clinic where the critters like to scratch, too.
