Heather Pope, Pennsylvania Campaign Manager with the non-profit Compassion & Choices, discusses what end-of-life healthcare options are currently available in the state.
New Jersey is one of ten states that currently allow physicians to assist terminally ill patients in ending their own lives. New Jersey enacted the law in 2019 and requires patients to be state residents. Last year, 122 people ended their lives through that law; 70% of them had cancer and their average age was 72.
Compassion & Choices is working to expand the range of end-of-life choices accessible to Pennsylvanians in their final moments. Polls show that 74% of Pennsylvanians support Medical Aid in Dying. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of MAID and how they may support efforts to authorize the option for qualifying patients in Pennsylvania.
This is a program in our Life & Legacy series dealing with end-of-life issues.
